On Thursday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked with Ratan Tata’s brother, Noel Tata, and conveyed condolences on the loss of the renowned businessman and philanthropist. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend Ratan Tata’s burial on behalf of the Government of India.

Ratan Tata, the Tata Group’s longtime chairman, died on Wednesday night at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. He was 86.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left on a two-day visit to Laos to attend the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and the 19th East Asia Summit.

In a series of posts on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Ratan Tata as a “visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.” He praised Ratan Tata’s most distinctive quality, “his passion for dreaming big and giving back.”

“He was at the forefront of championing causes like education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare to name a few.”

Modi recalled his meetings with Tata, saying, “I met him frequently in Gujarat while I was the Chief Minister. We would discuss many subjects. His points of view were really interesting to me. These exchanges continued when I arrived in Delhi. His death has caused me much sorrow. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers. “Om Shanti.”

The Maharashtra government has proclaimed a day of mourning on Thursday to honour Ratan Tata, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.

On October 10, Maharashtra’s government offices will fly the national flag at half-mast. According to the announcement, no entertainment events will take place on Thursday. Tata’s mortal remains will be displayed at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, allowing visitors to pay their condolences. His last rites will take place later today in Mumbai’s Worli neighborhood.
