A huge protests: A nine-year-old girl was killed on Friday in Joynagar, West Bengal‘s South 24 Parganas district. Her body was discovered late on Friday. Police have apprehended the accused, an 18-year-old youth.
The villagers claimed that police first declined to file a missing persons report. A crowd of 200 people ransacked and set fire to the Mahishmari police outpost. When cops arrived in the town to recover the body in the early hours of Saturday, furious villagers insulted them.
A significant police detachment, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), was dispatched to put the situation under control. Police had to use lathi charges and tear gas to disperse the mob.
“We received information around 9 p.m. on Friday. A case was filed. The offender has been arrested and has confessed to the crime. When police arrived in the village about 3.30am on Friday, villagers launched a protest. We completed every step in a timely manner. We are investigating into the villagers’ complaints,” Palash Chandra Dhali, superintendent of police for the Baruipur police district, told reporters.
According to people familiar with the case, the victim, a Class 4 student, entered tuition classes at 2.30pm on Friday. When she did not return home until late in the evening, her family and villagers began looking for her.
“She visited my shop in the local market around 5 p.m. on her way home from tuition classes. However, when I went home at night, I was told that she had never arrived. We began searching for her. Later, her body was discovered about a kilometre from our house,” the victim’s father informed reporters.
Locals claimed that when they went to the Mahishmari police camp and Joynagar police station to file a missing person complaint, the police initially refused to accept it.
“While cops at the Mahishmari camp told that we required to file the missing report at Joynagar police station, there the cops said we should approach the Mahishmari camp,” according to the victim’s uncle.
Protests erupted when the body was discovered in the early hours of Saturday. A crowd ransacked and burned the Mahishmari camp. A motorcycle was also set afire. When a police detachment arrived, they were heckled. Women took to the streets carrying lathis, brooms, and kitchen utensils. Ganesh Chandra Mondal, a TMC legislator from Kultali, was also chased away by the angry villagers.
